Favorite Monument

Shiloh National Military Park is about 25 miles from where I live. I've been there countless times over the years. The Park has some stunning monuments but this one has always been my favorite.

It is the Confederate Monument erected in 1917 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Over 18 ft high, it symbolizes the "Lost Cause" at Shiloh. The center figures are all female. The middle one represents Defeated Victory. She is passing on the laurel wreath to Death on her right and Night is on her left. Death took away General Johnston, the commander in chief and night brought in Union forces that defeated the Confederate army during the second day of the battle.

On either side of the monument are figures of soldiers. One side representing the first day's victory and the other side, the defeat on the following day.

You can click on the photo for a better look at the monument.

What a lovely monument, Dixie Belle! Touching isn't it? I'll be checking in with you for your Sven challenge to give you moral support!

Hugs,
Michelle

Gorgeous. I cannot wait to see this. Shiloh was a battle where no one really won. What a mess. What misery. And ironic. Watching your Sven posts, too!
